About the Project
I worked with Walls and Things, a studio known for a signature style of contemporary elegance with a touch of eclecticism, on a high-end duplex at Atmosphere in Calcutta.
With stylist Janavi Jhaveri, the shoot focused on documenting the space's styling and furniture, much of it imported from Italy, blending clean lines, natural materials, and unexpected accents into a look that felt sophisticated, inviting, and timeless.
The Brief
The brief was to document the styling elements and furniture pieces throughout the space. The shoot came with real constraints from the start: limited windows of time due to the family still occupying the home, and persistent monsoon rain that made lighting unpredictable throughout. By day two, the weather had worsened enough that multiple additional lights had to be brought in to keep the shoot on track.
The Approach
Lighting was the defining challenge of this shoot. Despite the duplex's large windows, monsoon cloud cover meant the natural light dropped rapidly and without warning, so I worked with a combination of ambient and flash lighting to consistently achieve the desired result.
For several shots, I lit individual elements within the frame separately to bring out the colour and detail in each piece. Given that the furniture, rugs, and artefacts were rare and, in many cases, irreplaceable, handling them with care throughout the shoot was just as important as the photography itself.
There was so much to capture that I ended up shooting right up until the very last minute, wrapping just in time to make my flight out.
