About the Project
I worked with Purvi Shah Interiors, a full-service boutique design studio known for creating highly personalised, elegant, and flexible spaces, on a cozy 3BHK in one of Mumbai's most sought-after residences, with an unobstructed view of the bay.
Every room in the home carried its own distinct personality: the master bedroom was clean and utilitarian in monotone brown and beige, the second bedroom was light and airy with beautiful sunlight and striking glass shutters, and the guest bedroom leaned boho, built around a Murphy bed and clever storage tucked behind nearly every panel and door.
Tying the entire apartment together was a wraparound balcony spanning all three bedrooms and the living space, facing west and transforming in character entirely once the afternoon sun began streaming in.
The Brief
The brief was documentation of the space. Since the residents had already been living there for about a year, a fair amount of cleanup and touch-up work was needed to address everyday wear and tear in the final edit, and each room took longer to shoot as a result, with more to move and reset before the camera came out.
The Approach
With an entire wall of windows, the assumption was that the space would be effortlessly well-lit throughout, but the light dropped off quickly the deeper we moved into the apartment.
Every shot needed at least one supplementary light to balance the strong wash of light near the windows against the dimmer interior, keeping each room looking evenly lit and cohesive. Compositionally, I leaned on layered framing, letting one space peek into the next, to give a stronger sense of how the apartment actually flowed room to room.
